Scaling and polishing

What is scaling and polishing?

It is a routine teeth cleaning procedure.

What does it do?

Scaling and polishing is used to get rid of tartar(hardened bacteria), food and enamel discoloration that normal tooth brushing cannot. It might give teeth a cleaner, whiter appearance.

Is it the same as whitening?

No, tooth whitening is purely cosmetic procedure to lighten tooth colour and does not affect oral hygiene at all.

What are the types of cleaning?

1) Routine Scaling and Polishing

2) Deep cleaning (Scaling and Root planning)

A gum treatment used commonly to treat periodontal diseases. A numbing injection may be required prior to treatment.

3) Prophyjet

A high tech air polishing tool that aids in removing tough stains.
It is effective for removing stains and plaque in hard to reach areas e.g. during braces treatment

How often should I go for scaling?

Every 6 months. Our dentists might recommend a shorter treatment interval for patients with gum problems.

What can I expect after scaling and polishing?

You may experience some sensitivity and bleeding from the gums. The amount of bleeding typically depends on the amount of inflammation of the gums (healthier gums typically experience less bleeding). Bleeding should stop within a day.
